Gerry Protti

Chair of BlackSquare

Gerry Protti is currently Chair of BlackSquare, a technology company providing enterprise direct-to-consumer focused e-commerce technologies as well as tech-enabled managed services to the global alcohol industry. BlackSquare is headquartered in Calgary with offices in Toronto, Melbourne and London, U.K.
Gerry is also a Senior Fellow and member of the Energy Policy Council at the CD Howe  Institute, a board director of the MacDonald-Laurier Institute and is a board director of the  Multiple Sclerosis Scientific Research Foundation.

Gerry has more than 40 years of experience in the energy industry. In March 2018 he completed a five-year term as the Chair of the Alberta Energy Regulator, the largest energy regulator in North America.  During his term, the AER Board oversaw the amalgamation of three separate regulators and then developed a comprehensive strategic plan with performance targets and measures.

Gerry has also served for 15 years as an executive officer of EnCana Corporation and one of its predecessor companies PanCanadian. Mr. Protti’s corporate experience includes marketing, operations, new ventures and corporate relations. In the new ventures role, he oversaw vertical integration initiatives for the oil and gas producer and developed a fund for investment in renewable energy technologies.

Gerry was also the founding president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and was executive director of the Independent Petroleum Association of Canada. He has also served as Chair of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, CAPP and the Public Policy  Forum and was appointed to the Boards of Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, SAIT Polytechnic and the University of Alberta. Gerry has also served as Chair of the Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society Foundation.
Gerry received a Bachelor of Arts, Honours (Economics) from the University of Alberta, and a  Master of Arts (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario. He has completed the Wharton Business School’s Advanced Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania and is an Institute of Corporate Directors certified Director, ICD.D.
